Valentine’s Day hats
Good morning, all! The Michigan Chapter is hoping to make a donation around Valentine’s Day, and I thought I would share my favorite hat patterns with you all. Turns out, that’s easier said than done! My “girl” pattern is so old I can’t find the link online any more, and my “boy” pattern is on the Lion Brand website and you may need to log on in order to view. That being said, I will share some links and see what happens!
The hat that I usually make for boys is called Queen of Hearts by Lion Brand. It has a matching blanket but I don’t usually bother with that. The main thing I use from this pattern is the red stripe, which looks like very small hearts; I’m not good with pom poms so usually do a plain top. Here is a link. The hat I like to make for girls is a simple roll-brim hat with a top-knot made by making a short I-cord using the last 4 or 5 stitches left after the decreases at the top of the hat. I make this cord long enough to tie in a knot at the top of the hat. I use a “heart” chart to knit a band of hearts around the head just over the rolled portion but you could also embroider them on using duplicate stitch. The chart I use is similar to the one here. http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/holiday/heartchrt1.shtml The chart in my files is 7 stitches across and 6 rows tall, so you should be able to come up with a pleasing shape by playing around with the chart in the link. Be sure to allow one “plain” stitch between hearts, though, when making the hats! I’ll try to get busy and make a few so I can post pictures but I wanted to get the links posted now, so you will have time to add these to your knitting lists! If you feel motivated to knit up a few of these for the Michigan Chapter, we’d love to have them!
