July 2008 Workgroup weekend
Is there a better way to spend a hot, sticky July weekend than sewing cute, cute blankets for critically ill babies in the NICU and Peds ICU? A group of dedicated volunteers gathered at the Aker home this weekend for hours of friendship, food, and sewing during The Preemie Project quarterly Workgroup weekend.
This weekend has become a tradition for many of the “regulars”. There were a number of new volunteers that we hope had enough fun that they will make the workgroup weekends a regular date on their calender. All of the blankets were precut before the sewers came together. We were finishing up fleece/flannel Hawkeye blankets for the “Hawkeye” donation that is scheduled for right before the first University of Iowas Home football game. We made the traditional Black and Gold plus pink/white Hawkeye blankets for the little girls. (Shhh! It’s a secret!) In addition to the Hawkeye blankets, the group also made a variety of Fleece/Flannel baby blankets to be distributed to the children in the NICU and Peds ICU.
.

The piles of completed blankets grew throughout the day. At one point, the pile of partially completed blankets almost overtook the volunteers. The weekend was finished with a total of 209 blankets being lovingly sewn.Thank you to Sheri, Darlene, Amy, Kaitlin & Elana, Carla, Judy, Michelle, Ann, Isabel, Nancy, Ann, Jane, Lori
