Mother’s Tears Hankies

This week we received a very lovely donation. Isabel Zvorak brought me a bag of her wonderful knit hats. Hidden in the bottom of the bag was 6 Mother’s tears hankies she had made.
I don’t know if the picture does these justice but I wanted to share them with you. These are one of the most requested items that we donate. They are included in every bereavement package we put together. In addition to packages that include a gown, hat, booties, blanket, we also make up miscarriage packages for mother’s who experience early loss. In the miscarriage package is a small handmade bear, a Hankie and a card from The Preemie project. We provide these as a small momento of the life she carried. The OB-Gyn department is requesting more of the miscarriage packages from us. Unfortunately we are unable to provide these right now because we have been completely out of the hankies.
These can be made from a purchased white hankie or sewn from a cotton batiste material.

It appears that Isabel sewed hers using a serger to sew on the lace. I have seen these made by simply zig-zagging the lace on. Isabel has a wonderful sewing machine that does embroidery. This can also be done by hand embroidery.
This one looks like counted cross stitch.

I really like the white on white that she has done here. It is very simple and tasteful. The one done with the pastels is also very nice and well done. I think the more subdued colors are most appropriate. I am sure the work will be well appreciated. Thank you Isabel.
I am hoping that these pictures can convince a few of our volunteers to help us with this project. It is probably the biggest need the bereavement committee has right now. If you think you might be able to help us with this, please contact me.
