"CRAFTING FOR PREEMIES" CONTEST GUIDELINES

Announcing the Crafting for Preemies Contest!

The families we support often comment on the remarkable creativity and skill of our volunteers. We've designed this contest to showcase your talents!

Type of Items Accepted

Items must be suitable for preemies and infants, including hat and bootie sets, receiving blankets, diaper bags, bibs, onesies, etc. You can knit, crochet, sew, quilt, or use any crafting skills you have to make your submissions.

Categories

There will be two separate contests: one for crafted items based on original patterns and the other for crafted items based on published patterns. Both categories will be judged on execution, but the original pattern will be judged on the creativity of the design as well. Both categories require finished crafted project in two areas: knitted or crocheted projects and thread and needle projects (including quilting, sewing, embroidery, etc.)

  1. Best original knitted or crocheted item
  2. Best knitted or crocheted item based on a pattern
  3. Best original needlework or sewn item
  4. Best needlework, quilted, or sewn item based on a pattern
  5. Volunteer's Choice: Any items submitted that do not fit one of the categories above will be eligible for one of these award(s)

Winners and Prizes

There will be one winner for each category as well as one or more "volunteers' choice" winners. Prizes will be announced at the Craft-a-Thon.

Rules for entry

  1. All entries must be submitted with the official submission form (includes important information like name, materials, etc.) Form can be obtained by clicking here or can be mailed to you. If you would like forms sent to you, email or call (319) 338-5035 and leave a message with your name and address.
  2. It's preferable that all items entered into the contest be donated to The Preemie Project after judging. However, if you would like your item returned, you should either come by the Craft-a-Thon after 8:00pm to pick up your item or provide a self-addressed return envelope or box with postage paid. If there are no specific instructions, items will be donated to TPP.
  3. Each contestant is limited to two items per contest (i.e., no more than two items can be submitted in the original knitted/crocheted pattern contest)
  4. Original Design
  5. a. To qualify as original, the pattern must represent a substantial departure from published patterns. You might use another pattern as a starting place for creating your own design, but your finished design should differ significantly from the original.
    b. Original design entries can have two names on the submission form (one for the designer, one for the crafter). If such an item wins, only one prize will be awarded.
    c. If you submit an original pattern, you will have the opportunity to submit your pattern to the TPP pattern book that is currently being assembled. If you would like to submit your pattern for this book, please include a clearly printed copy of the pattern with your entry or email with a typed copy.
    d. Scoring criteria: (from least to most important)
        i. attractive choice of colors and/or pattern (if applicable)
ii. neatness of work and finishing
iii. suitability for preemies and babies. This includes appropriate size of the item, using soft yarn or fabrics—basically, the fit of the item to The Preemie Project guidelines for submissions.
iv. creativity of the design—designs that differ significantly from traditional patterns will be scored higher on creativity.
  6. Published Design
  7. a. Any item based on a pattern obtained from published books, websites, or other means is categorized as an item based on a published design.
  8. Quilted items: Piecing and quilting must be done by the same individual with the exception of classes for team or group quilts. Please indicate on the submission form the name of the group or team who worked on the piece.
  9. Quilt blocks that are not a finished baby item will not be accepted.
  10. Only entries that appear new and clean will be displayed for the contest.
  11. All items entered must be strictly the work of the submitter.
  12. Store-bought decoration (fake flowers, buttons, etc.) are acceptable as long as they make up only a small part of the total design.
  13. If the entry is comprised of multiple pieces (e.g., hat and bootie set), the entry should be placed in a bag together or attached with safety pins or other means to keep them together.
  14. The organizers will make every effort to insure the safety of articles after their arrival and placement, but are not responsible for any loss or damage that may occur.
  15. Submitted items must be sized for babies and preemies and designed with their sizes in mind.
  16. You do not have to be present to win. Prizes will be mailed to contestants who cannot pick up the prize from the organizers.

Judges

  1. Two well-qualified and impartial judges will score each entry using a common scoring guide. The item in each category that receives the most points will win a prize. In the case of a tie, the contest chair will cast the deciding vote after scoring the entries.
  2. Volunteer's Choice awards will be based on a popular vote. All attendees of the Craft-a-thon will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite entry. Votes will be counted shortly before the announcement of the winners. Exact times will be available closer to the event date.
