Mission Statement

The Preemie Project seeks to provide comfort and support to critically ill infants and their families in Newborn Intensive Care Units in Iowa. We achieve our mission through the support of a devoted group of local and national volunteers.

We have updated our Urgent needs list 5/31/16

Please see the Urgent Needs Page on our website for an updated list of the items we are in need of at this time.

We have cleaned out most of the overflow of hats that we had earlier this year. We can begin accepting donations of regular hats and booties for NICU babies again. NICU nurses request pink and blue hats for new babies. But they have also requested bright colors. Please do not use dark colors like dark green, navy, brown, dark gray alone. Brighten it up with a fun bright color. Bright colors are best for photos and add cheer to the drab NICU environment.

We DO NOT need donations of fabric hearts - Developmental Hearts. We have received close to 15,000 in the last 6 months. If you have fabric hearts to donate, here is a list of Hospitals and Groups requesting Developmental Hearts.. If you are unable to download this list, please email us at and ask for this list.

500 RED HAT for American Heart Association!

We are asking The Preemie Project Volunteers to make 500 solid red hats. 90% of the hats should be NEWBORN SIZE, 10% may be preemie size. The hats will be donated to The Iowa American Heart Association Little Hats Big Hearts Campaign

Last year the Iowa American Heart Association collected 800 hats for their first donation. The Preemie Project sent them 100 Red hats for this first year of their Little Hats Big Hearts Campaign. They would love to be able to double the number of Iowa hospitals they include in this educational campaign. We know TPP volunteers can help them out in a very big way!

500 PURPLE HATS!!

The Preemie Project is very well stocked on regular (non-holiday) hats. We are asking volunteers to pull out their PURPLE YARN!

TPP has set a goal of 500 NEWBORN SIZED PURPLE HATS for the 2016 Iowa Click for Babies Campaign! We would be thrilled to be able to present a huge number of hats to this wonderful organization. Will you help?
