NICU Bedding Donation Deadline

The mission of The Preemie Project NICU Bedding Program is to create a comfortable, colorful environment for families with donations of soft, colorful sheets.  Initially, infants in the NICU are very critically ill.  As a result, most of the caregiving activities are performed by nursing staff.  Being able to choose the sheets for their infant’s bed is often the first and only caregiving act parents are able to perform.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You can help by sewing and donating flat sheets, fitted sheets and fleece pads to help our NICU families create a homelike atmosphere in their baby’s hospital room.

CRAFTING GUIDELINES?
-Cottons or flannel fabric may be used for sheets.

-Cotton fabrics are preferred because they will last twice as long as flannel.

-Please use cute baby prints or modern prints preferred by new moms for their nurseries.  Take a look at this Etsy search for “Nursery Bedding Sets”. These are not your grandma’s nursery fabrics!

-In general, bright, bold colors will stand up to the hospital harsh laundry best. If using flannel fabric, many reds and black patterns will bleed and are not recommended.

HOW DO I MAKE BEDDING FOR THE NICU?

Uses 1 yard of 42 in wide cotton or flannel, serge or hem the entire piece.  Do NOT cut the piece to make it square. Finished size is about 41inch x 35inch.

Uses 1.5 yards colorful cotton or flannel prints. Find our fitted sheet pattern HERE.

Use a 22in X 30in piece of solid or colorful print FLEECE to make these.  Buy a 22 inch long piece of fleece; Cut it down the middle to make two 22 inch x about 30 inch fleece pads. Serge, or use your sewing maching to over-cast stitch around edges to keep it from stretching. That’s it!

April 1, 2017 We collect donated bedding all year.  If you want to have your donation included in our BIG ANNUAL donation to Iowa NICUs, please mail your donation by the deadline
